3 Golden Spelling Rules to Secure Band 8+
1. The "Drop the Silent E" Rule
When adding a suffix beginning with a vowel (-ing, -able, -ous), drop the silent final 'e':
- Argue + ing = Arguing (NOT Argueing)
- Value + able = Valuable
2. The Double Consonant Doubling Rule
If a single syllable word ends in a single consonant preceded by a single vowel, double the consonant before adding a vowel suffix:
- Begin + ing = Beginning (Double 'n')
- Refer + ed = Referred (Double 'r')
